CAF Releases Latest Club Rankings: Nigerian Football Faces Tough Reality.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled its latest club rankings, and only one Nigerian team made the top 75 — highlighting ongoing struggles for the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) on the continental stage.

Egypt’s Al Ahly remains Africa’s No. 1 club, followed by South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns. Rivers United is Nigeria’s highest-ranked side at 24th, while Enyimba sits 35th.

The rankings, based on a five-year performance cycle, show Rivers United ahead due to stronger recent continental outings. However, the bigger picture is concerning: Rivers United is the only Nigerian club to reach the CAF Champions League group stage in the last eight years.

The top 10 features giants like Espérance (Tunisia), RS Berkane (Morocco), Simba SC (Tanzania), and Zamalek (Egypt). CAF awards ranking points based on progress in its flagship competitions, with winners earning up to six points.

This update comes after Rivers United’s 3–0 loss to Pyramids FC in their Champions League opener, raising fresh questions about NPFL competitiveness.
