Born in Palermo, Buenos Aires to a Nigerian father and Argentine mother, teenage forward Spiff Asuzu Jonathan is attracting attention from both Nigeria and Argentina as a potential future international.
Currently shining in the youth ranks of River Plate, Asuzu has impressed with his sharp movement, consistent goal-scoring, and ability to finish with both feet. Though yet to be capped at international level, he remains eligible to represent either country.
Despite interest from Argentina, Asuzu has openly declared his desire to play for Nigeria—a choice fully supported by his father, Godwin Asuzu.
“He wants to play for Nigeria himself… it will be a thing of pride and honour for him to don the green white green,” said Mr. Asuzu.
With Nigeria’s U-20 team already qualified for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, the spotlight is now on whether the NFF will act swiftly to bring this exciting talent into the fold.
Asuzu’s pace, football intelligence, and ambidextrous finishing make him one of South America’s most promising dual-national prospects. His decision could influence not just his career, but also how national teams approach youth recruitment.
The race is on—and Nigeria may just have the edge.
