Former Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel, has taken aim at Arsenal’s overall performance this season, insisting their 2–1 win over Chelsea did not reflect the excitement expected from a major London derby.
Speaking on the Obi One Podcast, the Chelsea legend expressed disappointment with Arsenal’s approach, accusing Mikel Arteta’s side of relying too heavily on set pieces despite having several creative players.
According to Mikel, the match lacked flair, attacking spark, and the level of creativity expected in a rivalry game.
He said today’s derbies no longer deliver the intensity and joy he once looked forward to as a player.
Mikel added that although Arsenal earned the three points, the football on display was “difficult to watch,” noting their dependence on corner kicks—claiming they’ve scored 16 goals from corners this season.
He emphasized that with the money spent on creative talents, Arsenal should be able to win games through open play, not just set-piece routines.
