Thousands of Cameroonians filled the streets of Yaoundé on Monday to welcome the Indomitable Lionesses home after their historic triumph at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Fresh from a 3-0 victory over Malawi in Sunday’s final, the Lionesses secured Cameroon’s first-ever WAFCON title and were greeted by cheering supporters at the airport. Fans waved national flags, wore team jerseys and captured the celebrations as the players arrived.
The excitement quickly spread across the capital, with thousands lining the streets to cheer the team’s convoy in a festive atmosphere marked by singing, dancing and national pride. 
“It was their calm mindset from the start of the competition that carried them to victory. They deserved it,” said Aline Mvogo, one of the supporters who welcomed the team.
Cameroon’s achievement was made even more remarkable by the fact that the team initially failed to qualify for the tournament. Their participation became possible after WAFCON expanded from 12 to 16 teams.
Despite the fatigue of a long journey, the players joined in the celebrations, smiling and waving to fans. The festivities continued late into the night across Yaoundé, with music, dancing and car horns echoing through the city.
“I’m proud. I saw a strong and determined team,” said Florence Manga, a communications student who followed the Lionesses’ journey during the tournament.
On Monday, the champions paraded the WAFCON trophy through the capital, receiving a hero’s welcome from supporters. President Paul Biya also congratulated the team, describing the Lionesses as “valiant, talented and intrepid” while praising their performance.
The landmark victory is expected to further elevate women’s football in Cameroon and inspire future generations of players.
