Kenya’s Major Stadiums to Close for Renovations Ahead of 2027 AFCON.

Local football fixtures are expected to face major disruptions after Sports Kenya announced that Nyayo National Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, will be closed for renovations ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The shutdowns, set to begin next month, mean clubs that depend on the two venues will have to find alternative grounds for league games and other competitions.

Sports Kenya Director General Gabriel Komora confirmed that both stadiums will undergo significant upgrades to meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) requirements. He added that the agency is working with contractors and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to reduce the impact on domestic fixtures.

Komora, recently back from the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, expressed confidence that Kenya’s facilities will meet global standards once completed.

Meanwhile, construction of the 60,000‑seat Talanta Sports City Stadium—proposed to be renamed Raila Odinga International Stadium—has reached over 80 percent completion.

Government officials noted during a January 23 inspection that the project is now in its final phase, which includes installing an ETFE canopy roof and a GrassMaster hybrid pitch.

Work on transport infrastructure such as a dedicated railway station and road expansions is also being fast‑tracked.

Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi said the progress reflects the government’s commitment to hosting a successful AFCON tournament.
