
As anticipation builds for Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff clash with Gabon, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has released key match regulations to guide the high-stakes encounter.
Match Format & Rules:
1. Extra Time: If the match ends in a draw after 90 minutes, two 15-minute halves of extra time will be played.
2. Penalty Shootout: If scores remain level after extra time, the winner will be decided via penalties.
3. Substitutions: Teams are allowed up to five substitutions during regular time.
4. Extra Sub in Extra Time: A sixth substitution is permitted during extra time.
5. VAR in Use: The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system will be active, covering key decisions like goals, penalties, red cards, and mistaken identity.
The Super Eagles will face Gabon’s Panthers in a one-legged playoff that determines who advances to the next stage.
The winner will go on to face either Cameroon or DR Congo in the final of the mini-tournament.
The playoffs run from Thursday, November 13 to Sunday, November 16, 2025.
