Valencia head coach Carlos Corberán has refused to place blame on Super Eagles forward Sadiq Umar after the team’s 2–1 home loss to Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey.
Valencia were knocked out on Wednesday night in a dramatic match at the Mestalla, where Sadiq scored at both ends in a result that ultimately decided the contest.
Despite the Nigerian striker’s unfortunate own goal, Corberán defended him, stressing that the incident should not overshadow his overall contribution.
“I didn’t see Sadiq’s gesture, but I understand he was eager to score, and an own goal is always painful,” the coach said. “He’s put in a lot of hard work, and no player wants to experience that.”
His comments highlight the club’s support for Sadiq, who has continued to give his best since joining Valencia, even as their Copa del Rey run ended on home soil.
