Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has reflected on Atlético Madrid’s landmark 2–0 victory over Barcelona at the Camp Nou in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, describing it as a reward for the team’s unity and resilience.
The result marked Diego Simeone’s first-ever win at Barcelona’s home ground as Atlético coach. Lookman featured for 60 minutes before being replaced by Alexander Sørloth, who later found the net alongside Julián Álvarez.
Speaking after the match, Lookman highlighted Atlético’s defensive discipline as a major factor in the win.
“It was a good result. The performance of the team, particularly not conceding here, showed the effort everyone has been putting in and the unity we share,” he said.
He also pointed to the turning point just before half-time, when Barcelona were reduced to ten men following Pau Cubarsí’s red card, a moment Atlético quickly punished through Álvarez’s well-taken free-kick.
“Scoring after they had a man sent off was key. Julián’s free-kick was brilliant, and the timing of Alex’s goal in the second half was also very good.”
Acknowledging Barcelona’s quality, Lookman praised his side’s composure under pressure and stressed the importance of focus going forward.
“They are a top team and created difficult moments, but we persevered together. It’s going to be a massive challenge ahead — calm heads, and we take each game as it comes.”
He concluded on a positive note about his experience with the club:
“It’s been nice — it’s been great actually. Long may it continue.”
