Nigeria has officially entered the race to host the 2031 African Games, aiming to bring the continent’s biggest multisport event back nearly 25 years after the successful 2003 edition (COJA).
The bid was presented to the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) by veteran sports broadcaster and administrator Mainasara Ilo, who reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to deliver a world-class event.
Nigeria’s ambition is backed by a strong record of hosting major continental and international championships, including:
CAA Africa U18/U20 Athletics Championships
Africa Karate Championship
ITTF Africa Youth Table Tennis Championship
African Armwrestling Championship
West Africa Para Games
African Cadet & Junior Taekwondo Championship
Key sports leaders—Mallam Shehu Dikko (NSC Chairman) and Hon. Bukola Olopade (DG)—have driven reforms and championed the sports-economy agenda, which has already delivered tangible benefits.
Recent events like the CAA U18/U20 Athletics Championships boosted local businesses, benefiting over 5,000 SMEs. The Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, now a World Athletics Gold Label race, has enhanced Nigeria’s global visibility and tourism appeal.
Nigeria also successfully hosted the 2024 Africa Military Games, strengthening regional cooperation and creating jobs across hospitality, logistics, and tourism sectors.
Officials say hosting the 2031 African Games will promote unity, empower youth, stimulate economic growth, and elevate national pride.
