
A total of 74 athletes from Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, and Enugu states competed for glory at the just-concluded South East Taekwondo Championships, held at the Indoor Hall of Dan Anyiam Stadium on November 7th and 9th, 2025.
Imo State topped the medal table with an impressive 41 medals:
• 13 Gold
• 15 Silver
• 13 Bronze
Abia State followed closely with 28 medals:
• 12 Gold
• 11 Silver
• 5 Bronze
Ebonyi State secured 8 medals:
• 4 Gold
• 3 Silver
• 1 Bronze
Enugu State earned 4 medals:
• 2 Gold
• 1 Silver
• 1 Bronze
Hon. Obinna Onyeocha, Imo State Commissioner for Sports, praised the event for promoting grassroots development and youth exposure, stating:
“This initiative should be sustained to produce future champions who will bring pride to the region.”
Olympic medalist Chika Chukwumerije, returning to the sport’s management scene after four years, emphasized the importance of consistent investment in youth development.
Ikechukwu Chidiebere, 13-year-old gold medalist from Abia, shared how the event helped him bounce back from past setbacks and boosted his confidence.
Coach Musa Enakheme of Enugu described the championship as a vital prep step ahead of the National Sports Festival, which Enugu will host.
