CAF to Replace South African Officials for Nigeria vs Gabon World Cup Playoff.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is reportedly set to replace the South African referees initially appointed for the crucial World Cup playoff between Nigeria and Gabon, following widespread concerns over neutrality.

The original appointment of South Africa’s Tom Abongile as the center referee sparked significant debate among football stakeholders, with many questioning the impartiality of assigning officials from a country within the same regional bloc as one of the teams.

According to journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, CAF is now preparing to make changes to the officiating team. “South African referee Tom Abongile will not officiate the Nigeria vs Gabon game and will be replaced soon,” he stated, citing mounting pressure and controversy surrounding the initial decision.

Obayiuwana also revealed that CAF’s initial referee assignments were based on regional representation rather than merit, a move that has drawn criticism. The Nigeria vs Gabon match was reportedly assigned to a COSAFA referee, while other playoff fixtures were allocated similarly by region.

The Super Eagles are set to face the Panthers of Gabon in the semifinal round of the playoffs in Morocco. An announcement regarding the new officiating crew is expected soon.
