Real Sociedad manager Sergio Francisco has shed light on why Nigerian forward Sadiq Umar was given minutes in the recent match against Mallorca.
“Over the past ten days, he’s exceeded my expectations. He offers something different—he creates space and adds value to our squad. I don’t see him as just a third or fourth option up front.”
This statement reflects the club’s strategic positioning ahead of the January transfer window.
Despite Umar’s recent involvement, Real Sociedad does not currently view him as a core asset. With Mikel Oyarzabal leading the attack and Orri Oskarsson—signed for €20 million in the summer of 2024—also in the mix, Umar faces stiff competition.
The club’s approach appears to be giving Sadiq limited playing time to showcase his readiness and attract interest from potential buyers.
Real Sociedad is reportedly keen to offload the striker, whose contract runs until June 30, 2028. However, the remaining €10 million in unpaid transfer fees presents a challenge, as no club has yet met that financial demand.
