Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has publicly apologised to Super Eagles star Ademola Lookman for deploying him out of position during the club’s La Liga encounter against Villarreal.
Simeone explained that injuries and fitness concerns within his squad forced the tactical adjustment, with Alexander Sørloth sidelined and Julián Alvarez still regaining full sharpness.
“I have to apologise to Ademola Lookman; I know that’s not his position,” Simeone admitted.
The Atletico boss praised the Nigerian forward’s commitment and willingness to help the team despite operating in a role that limited some of his key strengths.
“He’s a great kid and he’s working hard, but he was missing the things he enjoys most: dribbling, scoring goals, taking players on one-on-one.”
Simeone added that Lookman is expected to return to a more natural attacking role once Atletico’s attacking options are fully available, allowing him to showcase the qualities that have made him one of Nigeria’s standout performers.
