Olympique de Marseille have begun their search for a new head coach after Roberto De Zerbi’s departure was confirmed in the early hours of Wednesday.
According to French outlet La Provence, OM officials have held talks with Éric Chelle, the current head coach of Nigeria’s national team.
Chelle is also on the club’s shortlist alongside former Marseille defender Habib Beye. Reports indicate that the Franco-Malian tactician is enthusiastic about the opportunity to lead at the Stade Vélodrome, viewing it as a key professional ambition.
French daily L’Équipe reported on February 11, 2026, that Chelle has been proposed internally as a potential successor to De Zerbi.
Chelle has boosted his reputation by guiding Nigeria to a bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. His time with the Super Eagles has focused on attacking play and developing young talent—qualities said to appeal to Marseille’s leadership.
That said, the Nigeria Football Federation has stated that Chelle remains under contract until 2027 and is fully committed to the national team project.
The next few weeks should bring more clarity on whether Marseille pursue a formal move and if any negotiations with Nigeria would be required.
