Ghana’s Black Queens clinched the bronze medal at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, defeating South Africa 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Friday. This match, a rematch of South Africa’s 2-0 group stage win, saw Ghana level the score with an own goal by South Africa’s Andile Dlamini in the 68th minute, after Nonhlanhla Mthandi’s 45th-minute opener. In the penalty shootout, Ghana’s A. Kusi, J. Bonsu, J. Cudjoe, and N. Amoh scored, while South Africa’s L. Motlhalo, B. Mbane, and J. Seoposenwe converted, but misses from S. Holweni and H. Magaia handed Ghana the victory. This triumph mirrors Ghana’s 2016 WAFCON bronze medal win over South Africa. For Ghana’s coach Kim Björkegren, this marks significant progress since taking charge in February. South Africa, the defending champions, missed a podium finish despite their earlier dominance. Ghana now leads the rivalry with five wins to South Africa’s four. The WAFCON 2024 final between Morocco and Nigeria is set for tomorrow.
