What should have been a night of celebration for Algerian football quickly descended into tragedy, as three fans lost their lives and dozens more were injured in a devastating incident at the 5 July Stadium in Algiers. The heartbreak unfolded just moments after MC Alger secured their second consecutive league title with a goalless draw against NC Magra.
According to the Ministry of Health, the collapse of a security barrier in the upper stand led to fans falling from a height as they surged forward in celebration. The stadium, filled to capacity, had been awash with joy and colour—green flares lit the air and songs of victory echoed across the capital. But in a cruel twist of fate, that joy was cut short.
Over 70 people have been treated in three hospitals, with injuries ranging from minor to severe. In an emotional gesture of solidarity, MC Alger players and staff visited the hospitals to donate blood for the wounded—a poignant reminder of football’s power to unite even in moments of deep sorrow.
